In line with the World Heritage Committee’s Global Strategy, the project’s objectives are to improve the thematic representation of African natural heritage sites on the World Heritage List and the overall implementation of the Convention in Africa. Phase I of the project focused on capacity building in the field of Natural World Heritage conservation and protection. Phase II aims at developing several new nominations to the World Heritage List.
The project follows the objectives agreed upon by the countries attending the Great Rift Valley meeting in March 2007, focusing on biodiversity conservation in a manner that promotes social and economic development in the associated communities.
